FIELD NOTE / COLOUR
LOOK AT THE
WHOLE FRAME.
A colour does not live on its own. Build a visual reference that includes everything around it.
EDITORIAL COLOUR REFERENCEOne lead colour is a useful beginning.
Choose the mood first: warm, cool, graphic, soft or tonal. Pick a lead colour and compare it with the wardrobe and background you already have in mind.
Contrast can come from more than hue.
Light and dark, smooth and textured, busy and simple can all change how the image reads. A monochrome direction may need a tonal difference more than an extra colour.
Make a reference, not a promise.
Photographs, displays, lighting and editing all affect colour. Keep the reference as a conversation starter; confirm any actual product shade and characteristics separately.
